Another reason sports are great: 18-year-old gives away scholarship

Sometimes, when you win a $40,000 scholarship for winning a free-throw contest, it’s too much. As it turns out, it was for 18-year-old Allan Guei, who won the generous scholarship at Compton High School after qualifying for the free-throw contest. Guei was already an All-Star basketball player, and a gifted student, and from a poor family, so everything came together for him.

Then it got even better.

Shortly after winning the scholarship, Guei received a full-ride to California State University-Northridge. NCAA rules allow him to keep the $40,000 he had already won, but it was too much for him. Instead, he donated the entire scholarship to the remaining contestants who didn’t win. His generosity is now helping many students in need go on to higher learning.

Simply amazing generosity. Especially in a time of major pay-to-play scandals.
